The Last Vestiges of Summer
I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence
By Amy Sedaris

You may remember Sedaris from the TV series Strangers with Candy, but this hilarious comedian can do more than act. I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence is her 2006 sidesplitting guide to throwing parties with the hopes of returning readers to the times when the word entertainment was “charmingly old-fashioned.” While her tongue is firmly in cheek, novice party-planners will actually find some helpful hints along the way as Sedaris offers instructions and real recipes. She’s also the author of Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People which will be released on November 2, with which she hopes to forever change the world of crafting. (We don’t think Martha is worried, but Sedaris is a good read).
Fun in Your Own Backyard
Outdoor toys are the key to summer fun. Even running through the sprinklers can lead to hours of entertainment for kids … not to mention keeping them physically active and out of your hair for awhile. There are even grown up “toys” for the kid in all of us that the whole family will enjoy! So get outside and have some fun with these cool summer fun items.
Sima XL-8 96-Inch Inflatable Home Theater Kit

Yes, you read correctly, it’s an INFLATABLE home theater kit! This kit is compatible with all projectors and includes everything you need to turn your backyard into a movie theater (or the perfect setting to watch the big game or make a neighborhood movie night!): a 96-inch inflatable screen (144” also available), a pair of 100W amplified speakers with 8-inch woofers, pump volume control audio cables, stability tie downs, ground stakes, ground cloth, a screen repair kit, and a nylon carry bag. Ok so this kit may run you $600, but thanks to living in SoFla, you can get year round use out of it. Plus you can even invite your whole neighborhood over and charge them $5 each to watch a new release at your house and make your money back in no time (although I think there are laws against that so don’t tell anyone I suggested it!). Perfect for movies under the stars with family and friends, kids’ sleep overs, BBQs … heck, do you really need a reason to watch a movie or sporting events in your own back yard? Visit www.simaproducts.com for details. $602.99 at amazon.com.
Banzai Falls Water Slide

You’ll be the envy of the neighborhood kids with this wacky water slide! It features a climbing wall that leads to a steep slide that empties into a pool. You can even use it with your in-ground pool for a bigger splash! It claims to hold up to 200 lbs. but I’d stick to just letting the kids use it. If mom or dad jump on for a ride after a couple glasses of the sangria recipe we suggested, you just may have some really upset kids when the thing blows. $379 at amazon.com.
Wham-O Slip ‘N Slide Double Wave Rider

Many of us had a Slip ‘N Slides when we were young as they’ve been around forever, and it’s still a fun way for kids to stay cool in their own backyard. This classic toy is much more affordable too, even the newest version, the Double Wave Rider. This slide can handle two kids at once as they race to the end into a small splash pool with an inflatable stopper. Simple set-up and easy maintenance ... just watch out for belly flops (ouch!). $26.05 at amazon.com.
