Wine Ideas for Mother's Day
By Frank Reider
Maybe Mom is tired of the same old same old. Flowers are nice, wine is ba-ba-ba-BETTER! Sometimes an original bottle of wine can be the best present because it demonstrates that the giver put some thought into buying just the right thing for the person they want to honor. Mother’s Day is no exception. If the woman you are gifting enjoys wine, getting her a wonderful bottle can make her day. (And night!!)
Here are some interesting suggestions to make the lady in your life happy on this holiday or any other day of the year.
If she likes the big bold taste of Bordeaux wines, here are some great selections from South America that won’t wallop your wallet but is guaranteed to satisfy even the most demanding palate.
My friend Dona Alicia’s favorite wine is Amancaya which can be purchased for under $20. It is a Malbec blend from the Argentine subsidiary of Lafite Rothschild. Aged in French oak barrels produced exclusively for Lafite, this wine is velvety smooth and delicious and goes fabulously well with all meats, grilled lobster, shrimp and chicken. Luxury For Less!
At a recent wine tasting I hosted, we had the wonderful experience of having a Malbec from Dona Paula Seleccion. This is the top of the line for this terrific winery from Mendoza and that one can be purchased for just under $30! Fabulous and if FRENCH, would cost more than triple!
Purple Angel is one of my favorite Carmeneres. This varietal is found solely in Chile, though its origins are straight from Bordeaux and were thought to be lost to the wine world forever when they were found still growing in Chile. Big and beautiful, Purple Angel is 100% Carmenere from Apalta, the crème de la crème of Chilean wine country. For under $55, I have tasted this against Bordeaux’s from 1982 with price tags into the stratosphere and it stands up to the best. A steal at this price and a true treat for a special person in your life.
If she prefers a medium bodied wine, Pinot Noir is the ideal grape, loved by many for its middle of the road appeal. Not too flimsy, not too bold. Here are a couple of outstanding examples.
Casa Silva Pinot Noir comes in under just $10 and it is not to be believed for that kind of price tag. Round and firm with a long, smooth finish, this Pinot kills wines five times its price. Not easy to find but it is abundant at GOL! in Delray Beach. (Sorry, Mindi couldn’t help that plug!)
Casa Marin is a small winery in Chile near the Pacific Coast that produces truly fabulous wines. Their Pinot Noir is under $25 and is smooth as silk. Amazing for the money! Again not easy to find but very special.
Loma Larga is a boutique winery in Casablanca, Chile that produces a superb Pinot Noir. Aged 10 months in French oak, this wine has no filtering and low sulfates, producing an artisanal wine with a very special terroir. Less than 1,000 cases made each year, it can be still purchased for less than $35 which in the wine world is unbelievable.
If momma loves a cool crisp white, Sauvignon Blanc is a favorite of many women and Chile produces some magnificent examples.
Montgras produces a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc from Leyda Valley in Chile. Smooth with a crispy, citrus overtone, this wine is special with Sushi and grilled fish. It can be found for under $10 and competes with wines quadruple the price.
Montes Special Selection Sauvignon Blanc has won many blind wine tastings for this varietal and costs under $20. It is smooth, with wonderful citrus overtones, as well as a certain grittiness that makes it beyond special and well worth giving or trying yourself..
Terrunyo is the top of the line from giant wine group Concha y Toro. This Sauvignon Blanc tastes like it was produced in Burgundy. No kidding! Big for a white wine, yet smooth as white marble, it is simply fabulous. Can be paired with virtually any good food and is not overshadowed, and the cost is under $35 which makes it a true treat.
So this Mother’s Day, make sure your mom doesn’t whine that you never get her anything special. The gift of a fabulous and lesser known bottle of wine may make the perfect gift and one she will really remember!
